Fun Facts about Food Waste
According to World Wild Life research, about 1.3 billion tons of fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, seafood, and grains that either never leave the farm, get lost or spoiled during distribution, or are thrown away. In Australia alone, FoodBank states that 7.6 million tonnes of food is wasted every year, 70% of such food waste is edible but goes directly to landfill however.
Food Waste gives rise to...
Social or Humanitarian ConcernIn Australia, 3.7 million (36%) households are experiencing food insecurity at different level in past year. These households are reducing the quality, variety or desirability of their food and at worst, some reducing their food intake, skipping meals or without eating throughout the day.
Climate Change
Global food waste is a major attribute to exacerbate the climate change. When we waste food, we also waste all the energy and water it takes to grow, harvest, transport, and package it.
When food goes to the landfill and rots, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2). So if we stop wasting food, at least 8-10% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced.
As we know CO2 causes extreme weather such as heatwave, heavy downpours and wildfires, the University of Guelph research suggested that if each household could stop wasting 3kg of edible food each week, at least 23.3 kg of CO2 emission could be reduced. Can you imagine how much we can do to save our planet ?
Economics Impact
Foodbank study shows Food waste costs the Australian economy over $36.6 billion or $2,000 to $2,500 per household per year, despite 70% of it is perfectly edible.
